Transformational Power Within Communities

Business as mission hold lots of potential transformational power in communities.

Communities do need help. Lots of focus these days is on what is referred to in missions circles as the 10/40 geographical window of the world, especially as is cuts across East Asia and Africa. Here are a couple of facts about that geographical stretch of the planet:
  • About half of the people on the planet live there – over three billion
  • Some 95 % of those people do not know Christ
  • Estimates illustrate that the largest percentage of these, over 80%, are among the poorest of the poor on the planet.
It is logical that effort such as BAM finds a ripe field of harvest in such as setting. As we have pointed out in the past, however, don't think BAM is limited to such concentrated areas of suffering. There may also be candidate fields ripe for harvest right under our nose in our cities and communities all over the globe.
Author and BAM expert, Mark Russell makes a statement I fully agree with in his new book, The Missional Entrepreneur, "...BAM can be done by anyone, anywhere, and at anytime." Let's not limit our thinking about where business and economics can benefit God's purposes for the world. I love how Mark defines this interesting title of "Missional Entrepreneur" – "A person who lives on mission and stats up a business(es) in order to live out that mission..."

A Multiplying Strategy
2/15/2011 4:53:20 PM Link 0 comments | Add comment

A multiplying strategy is important to maximize impact. Reaching generations of people through our labors is much more powerful that simply teaching a few business skills to a few people. I like Paul's demonstration of this in 2 Timothy 2:2.

2Ti 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.
With the stroke of his pen in a single sentence, the Apostle Paul describes beautifully a strategy for multiplication across four generation/levels of people. Examine it.
  • 1st generation – the apostle himself
  • 2nd generation – Timothy
  • 3rd generation – reliable men who can teach
  • 4th generation – others
This is the strategy we should embrace in evangelism. I believe that a parallel strategy suits our BAM strategy.
  • A core persons, persons, or team within the culture can become our 2nd generation, our Timothy level.
  • The "Timothy's can find and/or win participants who can learn and become the business "teachers" or developers.
  • These then can reach far out into the families and other enterprises within communities.
Multiplication is a worthy and powerful goal to build into your BAM strategy.  We will talk about how it can transform communities next time.

Cross Cultural Reach

When we started this blog, we examined different definitions of Business as Mission. It is not that we need a succinct and simple description. More important is for us to recognize some important characteristics of BAM.

  • It involves business for profit.
  • The businesses are Christian led.
These businesses are often operated cross-culturally. To do this most effectively, the business leaders or owners must prepare people from inside of the culture to do the work. We learn this among the many lessons over the centuries of missionary work. It can be nearly impossible to drive successful evangelism from outside of a culture. The best strategy is from within the culture, with people who know the culture and who know how to operate within it.
Through the people from within the community, many others can be touched in a positive way. Confidence and trust can then grow and give tangible credibility to the positive contributions of the business in the community.  The people operating the business from within the community can reflect God's glory.  That makes transformation and good things possible.
This initial nucleus of local people working for the BAM can then begin to multiply the effort for the Lord.  That is our topic next time – a multiplying strategy.
Blessings,

Larry

The Harvest is Great, the Workers Are Few

Critical point
– we need capacity for both missions, the physical business and the spiritual. Be prepared to prepare yourself and BAM participants for both.

What is really amazing to fathom is the potential numbers of Christian men and women who can serve. Christians in business often struggle to find a fit between what God has enabled them to learn and to accomplish and Christ's Great Commission. BAM has a path to fill that spiritual void for many.
It is a beautiful thing to see accomplished business people connect the dots with God's will for them in the global mission to reach all nations and peoples. For them to discover that their mission in life (business) has prepared them for God's mission is amazing.
If this is of interest, please cruise back through our initial posts and get the background, beginning in October 2009.  We will revisit basic as we go in the coming weeks, also.
Your gifts and experience are needed.
Your kingdom rewards can be great.
Blessings,

Larry
