When we started this blog, we examined different definitions of Business as Mission. It is not that we need a succinct and simple description. More important is for us to recognize some important characteristics of BAM.

  • It involves business for profit.
  • The businesses are Christian led.
These businesses are often operated cross-culturally. To do this most effectively, the business leaders or owners must prepare people from inside of the culture to do the work. We learn this among the many lessons over the centuries of missionary work. It can be nearly impossible to drive successful evangelism from outside of a culture. The best strategy is from within the culture, with people who know the culture and who know how to operate within it.
Through the people from within the community, many others can be touched in a positive way. Confidence and trust can then grow and give tangible credibility to the positive contributions of the business in the community.  The people operating the business from within the community can reflect God's glory.  That makes transformation and good things possible.
This initial nucleus of local people working for the BAM can then begin to multiply the effort for the Lord.  That is our topic next time – a multiplying strategy.
Blessings,

Larry
